Making Bowel Screening Clear, Calm and Accessible

Inspired Film and Video recently partnered with the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care Board to produce a series of accessible films. These films support people with a learning disability and/or autism attending bowel screening appointments.

Working closely with the team at University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM), the films were created to clearly explain what happens during a bowel screening test. This helps reduce anxiety and remove uncertainty around the process. Research showed that worry about the appointment itself was a significant barrier to attendance. As a result, these films were commissioned to address that challenge head-on.

Filmed on location at the busy Royal Stoke University Hospital, the project required careful planning, sensitivity and flexibility. Inspired Film and Video led the full video production process, including creative development and directing the shoot. They also produced bespoke graphics. Throughout, easy-read icons, calm visuals, and a straightforward narrative were used. This ensured the information was presented clearly, reassuringly, and easily understood.

The result is a four-part video series that guides viewers step-by-step through the bowel screening experience. It helps them know what to expect before they attend an appointment:

The project demonstrates how thoughtful, inclusive filmmaking can have a real impact on health equality. It empowers people with the knowledge they need to feel more confident about accessing vital screening services.

“It became apparent that we needed to increase the number of people with a learning disability and/or autism attending bowel screening appointments. Recognising that anxiety about the appointment was a key barrier, we commissioned a video to explain the process in a clear and reassuring way. We approached Inspired Film and Video to work with on this project as we have worked with them before and have been impressed with their professionalism, flexibility and the high standard of the films produced. This experience was no different. Inspired Film and Video supported us throughout the process and were always on hand to lend their expertise. I wouldn’t hesitate to work with Inspired Films again (in fact we already have other projects booked in) and look forward to sharing these films, and the positive difference they will make.”
