Working with the team from Oxford University we were tasked with creating an an awareness video which gives the viewer a sense of what it is like to be an Autistic person in a busy environment and how this can be over stimulating. We needed to create a scenario that was everyday and relatable but allowed the audience to gain more understanding of what that same experience may feel like for some Autistic people.
The Creative Concept
We chose a simple cafe interaction for this awareness video, shown first from the perspective of a non Autistic parent and then again from the perspective of an Autistic child. Highlighting certain sounds, sights, smells, distractions and self regulating behaviours we wanted to create a building sense of the overwhelming nature of the scene. Working closely with advisors who are Autistic and theatre groups for neuro diverse actors to ensure we were as true to the themes as possible.
The Results
We are really proud of the finished film and Oxford University as well as everyone else involved in the project felt we had achieved something which gave an outsider a real insight into just a little bit of what some Autistic people experience in everyday situations. Contributing to more understanding in this area is something that is close to our heart at Inspired and we really hope that the film can help people nationwide.
Inspired Film and Video created an impactful film for the University of Oxford, focusing on autism sensory overload. The film is a key part of the university's development of a toolkit to help parents of autistic children better understand sensory overload challenges.
